Chair's Corner

George C. Hadjipanayis, Richard B. Murray Professor and Chair

Dear Visitor,

Welcome to the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Delaware! Students, staff and faculty of this Department are united in our prime objective: to be recognized nationally and internationally for excellence in physics and astronomy research and education at the graduate and undergraduate level.  The research of our award-winning faculty covers the whole breadth of the field and extends into neighboring disciplines. Our home - the Sharp Lab - offers over 70,000 square feet of research space equipped with state-of-the-art facilities and research instrumentation. With annual research expenditures of $7.3 Million, chances are we are working on something of interest to you.

Our instructional offerings include everything from introductory classes for nonscientists to highly specialized graduate courses. Laboratories around the clock, opportunities for research at every level, and multiple seminar series and  colloquium (as the major departmental weekly event) with invited speakers, round out the program. Circa 86 physics majors and 80 graduate students are in residence at any time. Whether you want to be a physicist or astronomer, are interested in a collaboration, or are looking to hire a physicist or astronomer, we have what you need!

Our alumni are the most important measure of our continuing success. Numbering well over 600 and spread all over the world, they are our true legacy. We are immensely proud of their achievements and deeply grateful for their unflagging support.

Please look around and become involved. We look forward to hearing from you.

With best regards,
George C. Hadjipanayis
