In this talk I discuss heavy-quark hadroproduction, specifically the present uncertainties on this process, considering both recent experimental results at the Large Hadron Collider and up-to-date theory developments. I show the consequences for predictions of neutrinos generated by the interactions of high-energy cosmic rays with the Earth atmosphere leading to intermediate heavy-meson states promptly decaying. I also discuss implications for the interpretation of the IceCube data and possible usefulness of these data to constrain unknown aspects of QCD.
