Complex plasmas have proven a versatile analog for the study of soft matter systems, particularly those whose global behavior is determined by the combined effect of the particles’ low temperature / kinetic energy, interparticle / interchain interactions, global and/or local confinement and streaming ion flow. Although the streaming ion flow plays a major role on Earth in interparticle interactions and particle alignment. it is generally much weaker than other system forces. As such, its effects are often masked by gravity in terrestrial experiments.
