Highly charged ions for atomic clocks and quantum information

July 22, 2014 - In the recent Physical Review Letters article, Prof. Safronova and her collaborators from the US, Australia and Russia have proposed 10 highly charged ions as candidates for the development of next generation atomic clocks, search for variation of fundamental physical constants, and quantum information processing. They predicted the ion properties crucial for the experimental exploration and highlighted particularly attractive systems for these applications.
